In an era where technology is rapidly advancing, security becomes more important than ever. A vivid example of this balance is the project Elevate Systems executed, funded by the Air Force Innovation Center (AFWERX). This innovative endeavor focused on integrating electronic flight bags (EFBs)—essentially iPads—into the E3 AWACS platform.

The E3 AWACS, however, has stringent security regulations that present unique challenges. Primarily, no wireless transmission of data is permitted in the cockpit, and direct power access from the aircraft is not allowed. This meant that conventional solutions were off the table, requiring a different, innovative approach.

Here is where Elevate Systems' ingenuity shines. The solution lies in creating a custom 3D printed casement for the EFBs. This casement houses not only the EFB but also a wired version of a Stratus ADS-B receiver, circumventing the ban on wireless transmission of data. For this, Elevate Systems partnered with Appareo, the manufacturer of the Stratus system, to construct a wired version, specifically tailored for this project.

Further, the casement also includes a 16-hour battery power pack. This is critical because the E3 AWACS often have sorties lasting up to 14-15 hours. The standalone power pack ensures that the EFB can operate independently throughout the sortie, maintaining both operational effectiveness and security compliance.

Navigating the security restrictions of E3 AWACS while ensuring operational efficiency was no small feat. Yet, with the innovative solution of the 3D printed casement, Elevate Systems was poised to tackle these challenges head-on. This endeavor demonstrated that, with the right innovation, security and technology can go hand in hand. This is just one example of how pushing boundaries and thinking creatively can lead to ground-breaking solutions, even in the most challenging circumstances.

At the conclusion of this effort the Air Force was provided unlimited and unrestricted access to all data created and today the Air Force has the ability to organically print the casements for future use.
